I am going to be installing a jake on the old girl and would like to have a switch that will fit in the dash hole where it belongs. I need to find out where to get such an Item if someone knows? Jerry
Mine just has a double throw toggle switch. Three positions; one for off, one for low, and one for high. Don't have a parts book, but any double throw switch with adequate rating oughta do it. If anybody else knows something I don't, feel free to chime in.
Dennis
When I bought my bus the jake switch was busted off in the ON position. I simply replaced it with a 3 position switch rated for the voltage and amperage. Works fine. Not aware of anything special about it. Hope this helps. But if I'm wrong, someone with real smarts will be chiming in soon I hope. ;D Will
Jerry, Jake has two different switches a single switch or the dual switches, the dual has a off-on and a hi- low and I don't know what your bus had.I think the dual switches are for the DDEC . good luck
MCI has them. not cheap
Look at the back of your broken switch. It should have either 2 wires or 3 wires connected to it. If it has 2 wires, any single pole. single throw (SPST) switch should work. If it has 3 wires, you will need a single pole, double throw with a center off position (SPDT center off) switch. If has 3 wires, the wire that connects to the center terminal should be the hot wire. the 2 end terminals will be HI and LO. Terminal will be opposite lever position. Just make sure switch is rated for voltage and amperage. Jack

If you are looking for a new switch, check import car parts places.
What I was hoping to find was one tht would go in the regular switch panel in the bus but if not I will install a regular toggle for now. Yes it is a two stage sw with three wires so two pole sw will work. Jerry
Jerry,
The switch you may want is Genuine Jacobs Brake.
You need 3 switches. Basically they are clutch, fuel and off/on. (Allison also has clutches). The switches need to be specific for your application because they vary for each rig. The on/off could be generic but if you have a Jake why not have a genuine switch with the Jake logo on it, whats a couple bucks? You can get info at jakebrake.com from the wizard, but I would try to verify the part numbers that MCI specs for your coach as well with the dash switch for fit.
I see that you live at the bottom of Cabbage Hill, so I can respect your desire, you are in a minority of those who really will get some good use out of a Jake! Woodpecker Truck in Pendleton is a Jacobs Dealer and PeterbiltPartsStore.com is a good online source of parts.

Jerry,
Standard automotive toggle switches should fit in the hole. Except for some of the rocker switches, almost all automotive toggle switched fit in a standard 1/2" hole. Jack
Well the coach is a 102a3 and the switches are of a rocker type that fit in a rectangular hole. I could drill a hole in the cover and put in standard switch. I think that would work fine as it has and allison transmission so dont need a clutch switch but do need the throttle switch. I was just hopeing to get a panel switch that would go rite in the hole where it belongs. Jerry
Larry, I'm not too fond of that coast traffic in the summer , I like to go the other way. Jerry

I am used to my old MC-8 with the old switches that fit in the 1/2" round holes. Check at www.waytekwire.com or www.delcity.net. Both carry an assosrtment of the rocker switches that snap into the rectangular hole. Jack
Jack , Looks like they only have SPST and I would need a DPDT. Jerry
Here is a DPDT (center off) rocker switch from Waytek wire. This switch has an indicator light for each one position. You pick to the type of actuator you want. Best to call them to order 1-800-328-2724. Jack

I had a Freightliner with a straight 6 and Jakes. It had two toggle switches with paddle handles. One was On/Off, the other was 2/4/6 Cylinders (so that you could tailor the amount of braking to fit the conditions). These were the only toggle switches on that side of the panel, and I didn't have to look down to use them.
If you look in the cockpit of an F-15, you see that the switches and controls are various shapes. A pilot can tell by touch what each control is. This is something worth considering. You may need to adjust (or kill) your Jakes some night in the middle of a cloverleaf, with construction lights in your eyes and Jersey barriers six inches from each side of your coach. It's a lot better to just reach over and slap both switches down than to fumble around to count the third rocker switch from the left, on the third bank down . . .

F-15's have jake brakes? :o Cool ;D ;D Is that to slow them on the declines? ;)
Seriously, this topic brought up a question when I read about the rocker switch with the off in the center position--My understanding on the 8V jake brake was that 'HI' turned on both banks of solenoids and 'LO' only turned on 1 bank. I wired my switch so that 'OFF' is down, 'LO' is in the middle and 'HI' is forward. On 'HI' I have power to both wires. On 'LO' I only have power to 1 wire. Should I have a switch that only powers 1 wire at a time, and if I do that, how do I know which wire for 'HI' and which for 'LO' without taking it out on the road and trial and erroring it?
I don't want to hijack this thread, but now I'm concerned that I might be damaging my jake when I use it by having it wired incorrectly.
Thanks for any clarification on this, Will
you are good, PP.
My preference is off at the bottom, full at the top, middle in the middle.
happy coaching!

Thanks BW. I'll sleep better now ;D ;D Will
