Title: Transmission engaging late
Post by: Kwajdiver on February 26, 2009, 04:51:33 PM
My automatic transmission seems to be slow to shift into gear once I press the forward button.  Seems it's waiting for a few more RPM's.  If I give it a little gas, it then shifts, but hard.  Reverse doesn't seem as bad.

Is there an adjustment, hummmm, I don't have a linkage.

MCI-9 1983
Allison 741

Thanks for the help,

Bill

Hi Bill, did you check the fluid level?
I saw you posted recently about a bad battery. Re-check connections and power to ATEC  ECU.
Call if I can help further.
Regards,
Sammy

Sammy,

Thanks,,, was getting dark, will check the level tomorrow.  Did have that on my mind to check.

If the level is good, and the battery is good, what is your next guess?

Have you tried exercise?  Have you been driving the coach?
Does the "D" indicator light come on immediately when the button is pushed?

Mine hasn't made a hard shift since I put you know what in it.

My buddy at Allison told me if mine ever shifted hard to get it right in. If I remember right he said there is a spring set that breaks that is cheap if you fix it right away.

Do you have any codes?

Had the transmission serviced, $168.44, including tax.  Transmission shifts fine.  Of course it shifted fine on the way to the shop.
It not been serviced in two years.  When I ask how bad the fluid was, I was told about average for two years.

End of Story.

Thanks for the help.

Bill, what did they put in it? I understand the latest OTC ATF spec eats the seals out of the older units. Did they tell you how much old fluid you retained? Mine is due and I guess it will get the Allison Synthetic.

They put in 20 quarts of "Parts Depot" Dex/Merc.  I kept a quart so I would remember what they used.

Bill, I would check my level with the plug on the tranny 20 qts is not much oil for a Allison

here is the capacity for different oil pan sizes  for you

4 1/2 in deep      31 qt
6  in                  33 qt
7  in                  35 qt
8  in                  37 qt

good luck

You can't get a full change, torque converter retains a lot.

happy coaching!

my local city transmission shop religously replaces torque converters anytime something is done to the tranny as far as semi to major work. 8)

Off the Wall... Clue?

Change your Transmission fluid filter cannister. Probably clogged and running in bypass mode
which means that you have to apply a little more pressure to trip the bypass. But once in bypass mode things will appear either slow or delayed.

Just a thought.. Had the exact same thing happen on a V-730 once...

I have never heard of changing out a good commercial torque converter, perhaps this refers to automobile units. Could be a money maker though!

I decided to go with Transynd for my B500 since it can be in the tranny much longer.  Regular ATF is one year and Transynd is 4 years.  I would never meet the mileage requirements for either.  You still have to change the filters every two years, but I don't know what a filter change involves.  Isn't one of the filters inside on a B500?

If you change your own tranny fluid it is probably cheaper to do ATF every year, but I don't have a good way to haul away the old ATF so I pay someone for this job.

If you can get a free Allison Torque Converter each time your tranny is worked on tell us where. They can have all of my Allison work.

Since changing transmission fluid & filter does not involve removing the transmission, I can't imagine why you would go ahead and remove the transmission to change the torque converter????  Jack

OK so what I was trying to say is that for me there has not been a charge so far for replacing a unit that was under warranty whenever other work has been done. One time I have been charged was like a $35 restocking fee. Then again I make balloons for this guy's kids. so go figure.  8)

As for the number of quarts,,, it came to 22, not 20.  I ask they check the book for the amountof quarts required.  Didn't trust my replacment dip-stick. Cold with 22quarts, engine just started, the fluid level was the top of the "Cold" line on the dip stick.
