Title: Spring Break in a Florida Parking Lot
Post by: jok on February 25, 2009, 09:06:25 PM
Five more weeks until Spring Break and I am getting excited. In Michigan we have had an "old fashioned" winter with plenty of snow and cold, with more to come. We just made reservations for a week at Beverly Beach Camptown in Flagler, Florida. It is a big "parking lot" style campground, but that is okay since it is right on the Atlantic. We have a pull-in site and will be able to look right out the windshield at the ocean. The kids can go right out the front door to the beach. After this winter it will be like paradise.  :)

Does anyone know anything about the Beverly Beach area? We are also planning on spending time in St. Augustine and Daytona Beach. Any suggestions on places we should not miss or good restaurants?

Thanks,
John

Without a doubt the Speedway museum and the tour. The Harley Davidson dealership is something to see  even if you are not into motorcycles on the north side of Daytona. Later

John,
Marilyn and I really enjoyed the Flagler Museum in St. Augustine.  Allow an afternoon to see it.  Well worth the visit.  Also, worth touring is the fort at St. Augustine.  Fascinating old weaponry, etc.  Enjoy!

If you have time and a way to get there, the Space center is a great way to spend a day with kids if they are old enough to appreciate it but it is not cheap.

In Daytona, The Ocean Deck is a couple blocks south of the Boothill Saloon and out on the beach. Nice bar, good Jamaican band and dance floor plus volleyball on the beach. Funnest bar on the beach. Rooftop Go carts are a block or so north of the Deck, just north of the pier. ( public fishing)

There are beaches that I take my bus on but not Daytona Beach, it only stays hard packed right by the water. The west end of Main St. is all the bike bars, I usually pickup a few Tshirts and track some water out of the Mens Room at the Boothill for luck. (Better there than across the street).

There is a very fast 1/2 mile asphalt track at New Smyrna Raceway and its only about 30 minutes south of Daytona.

NASA is about 50 minutes south at Coco Beach they have an awesome tour and its always a treat if they are launching something. One year they launched during Speedweeks and we watched a shuttle blast off from the grandstands at Daytona so check for what they are launching while you are in the area. Nite launches are spectacular.

Don't go to the Keys or You'll cry all the damn way home.

Thanks for all the info about the Daytona Beach/St. Augustine area. Sounds like some good places to go. It would be great to see a NASA launch. We saw a night shuttle launch in 1989 (I think). It was amazing watching it while sitting on the beach. Daytona Speedway sounds like fun. We always love eating, and being by the beach and it sounds like there are some great places for both.

We went to the Keys last February. It was a great time, and very hard coming home to the Michigan snow and cold.

Dennis, is the Flagler museum about how Henry Flagler developed Florida and the railroad he built to the Keys? The Fort sounds like something we would like.

Thanks,
John

John,
The Flagler Museum isn't so much about old world antiques or about his railroad and development, as it is lots of collections of old stuff from our time.  I found most of it to be things I could relate to.  (I'm 61).  I hope you find it as interesting and entertaining as we did.  I think you will.  I hope you'll share your opinion with us!
