Any of you guys know what is happening between Volvo and Prevost. In Phoenix the Volvo truck dealer has paint and bodyshops for buses and had 12 new Volvo 9700 for sale is Volvo dumping Prevost I can see no other reason for them selling the Volvo Bus in the USA.The 9700 is a good looking bus but is made in Mexico also the 2008 bus of the year. I also saw where Volvo sold Montreal 410 of the Volvo transit models made in Mexico.Or we going to have anything left that is not made in Mexico or China good luck
Clifford, maybe this will be enough motivation for U.S company's to get their heads out of the clouds and start becoming more competitive in today's market place, other wise we could start to see imports from countries like what, Iran and Venezuela infiltrating our market place(oh God!) So sad.

Would a bus from Iran come with the bomb already installed? And one from Venezuela be designed to use as much fuel as possible?
Please explain to me why importing buses from Canada is better than importing them from Mexico.

"Please explain to me why importing buses from Canada is better than importing them from Mexico."
Well, let me see.
For one, you don't have millions of Canadians rushing the border to try and take you jobs.
Canadians who go to the US usually spend money there.
And you don't have roving bands of Canadian thugs killing people in border states.
Hows that for a couple of good reasons.

At least the folks in Canada receive a livable wage and every Mexican built bus I ever seen and been around has wiring problem. The G series MCI is a good expample of a Mexican built bus. Me I am a buy American type guy and now days that is hard to do in the market place. good luck
Well I read somewhere ...and I think it was Autolust ...I am trying to find the link ....anyway , Volvo owns Prevost and they will be selling via Prevost dealers the 9700...and soon the Prevost will be coming with the Volvo engine and Ishift....which will suck as there are not enough service centers in the US to service the Volvo engines ....but then again some of the Volvo Class 8 trucks also have the Volvo engine ....so only time will tell ..I guess Eagle may once again rise up as American built and powered ....but that brings another question ...no more Cat ...no more S60...Cummins on the way out ...so what is going to happen ??

This still does not answer the question. There are criminals in Canada just as there are in the US and in Mexico. Mexican nationals in the US illegally (and, BTW, I have run into quite a few Canadian nationals who are here illegally as well -- there seems to be a conveniently loose understanding of the limits of tourist status) have nothing whatsoever to do with Mexican nationals who are working in a Volvo plant in Mexico.
I also fail to see what any of this has to do with Bus Conversions. Perhaps I can persuade one of our esteemed moderators to move it to the OT section?

I don't think the topic was bus conversion related either, but then the topic was about Volvo and prevost ,which sounds like a bus topic to me.The question posed by LUVRBUS was did any one know what was going on with Volvo and Prevo ,nothing to do with Canadian vs mexican imports.Don't see the need to move this thread.

Hey guy's I asked the question for a reason and that is because my son in law is looking into a Prevost shell to have Larry at Paradise Coach to convert for him, you can buy new shells for pennies on the dollar from Prevost that are new manufactured 2 years ago.He was told that the XLL is going away but nobody would comment on Prevost and Volvo sales so I asked here for the info

NAFTA, That's what is helping both Mexico and Canada. On the campain trail the President was going to get rid of NAFTA, now he said he is not. All the south American countries and China are shipping goods in though Mexico, using NAFTA.

It's hard to go wrong converting a Prevost shell. Plenty of service centers throughout the US.
The Volvo is probably harder to find help with. Also, I would expect (from experience) that Volvo-specific parts would be higher than similar items for Prevost.
FWIW.

Prevost will be using Volvo engines exclusively soon because Detroit is discontinuing the Series 60 and the replacement DD15 is not being sold outside the Diamler family.
i would suspect that it will be some time until the Prevost Name goes away.
Volvo kept the mack name and production for a good period of time before dropping the bulldog logo..and now the name will be going away too, but only after they got the Volvo market share up
It is sad to see all the prejudices of fellow bus nut posters but I guess that is probably a good cross section of the country.
Every time China or Mexico is mentioned the fusillades of prejudice start flying.
I wish the board monitors would just delete the whole mess.

I don't believe that the president ever said anything about getting rid of NAFTA. He did talk about renegotiating some terms of NAFTA and that will probably happen down the road. I think he might have some other priorities right now.
I am seeing a lot of adds in the truck trade magazines talking about how Volvo is adding a lot more service centers.
Gus, you said "Every time China or Mexico is mentioned the fusillades of prejudice start flying."
Maybe it is because most everything you purchase says it is made in one of those two countries...while at the same time most of the furniture jobs that used to be in our area, (Hickory and High Point, NC) has gone to those countries. And our government gave the firms tax breaks to move the firms out!
Then our crime and drug problems here seem to be more and more done by folks of Mexican descent.
After a while as my Mom says, "You get your craw full of it!" You asked...I had to answer.
Repectfully,
Jack
PS...I was looking at GoogleEarth the other day and went to Winnsboro, SC...I used to live a mile of so south of that Mack Trucks plant...low and behold it has been shut down for what looks like for a while. I did not know that!
Sean, thanks for editing your comments.
Hi Sean,
On the question of whether this thread is off topic, I would say that it is more on topic than Cody's postings about Libby's ordeal. BUT, Cody's updates on Libby have been some of the most read, and participated in, threads on the board in a long time. That shows me that there is a lot of intrest in how Libby is doing. In NO way would I suggest that the thread be moved to the off topic area.
Opinions here are as varied as the number of people on the board and thankfully we, for the most part, have the freedom to post ours.
Thanks, Sam 4106
Ok guys I looked on the Volvo Group Gobal web site and there is no mention of Prevost any longer. On the web page it has 9 compaines listed and no Prevost.Their news letter states that Volvo will be sold in the US and Canada after not being sold in North America for 20 years.Something is going on with Volvo and Prevost and I can not figure it out. good luck
Hi guy, does this help;

If the moderators feel that the libby update should be moved to off topic i have no problem with that, she is doing better and now hopefully will start the long road to recovery, any new developments can be handled in OT, I'm greatly humbled by the response shown for her , she has been my owner and trainer for over 37 years now and carries a certain level of importance in my life and I sincerely want to thanks everyone that sent a card, or a prayer her way, some sent flowers to her, sonny sent an air machine via jim shepard, I just hope that at some point I can repay the kindness shown to her. I don't mean to hijack this thread so I'll end with a heartfelt thank you and if the moderators feel it's time t move her thread to OT, it's fine with us.
Cody,
The All Topics BB is for threqds about buses and busnuts. You and Libby certainly qualify as busnuts. There are no political post, jokes or other off topic post on that thread. You and Libby are certainly on the minds of most busnuts and the up dates are always looked forward to. Jack
PS: We are working on a way to possibly visit ya'll this summer in our bus. Nothing definite, but we have a few plans that will hopefully come together.
It is maybe possible that the reason more things are made in foreign countries is the greed and incompetence of American top management. All you have to do is read any newspaper to see evidence of that.
It is a stretch to blame the Chinese or Mexican people for the loss of the NC furniture industry. It is really easy to blame somebody else. We are fat and lazy.
There is no evidence that Mexicans commit any more crimes per capita than any other ethnic people. Could it be because there are more of them now? One thing I admire greatly about them is their devotion to family and church and their hard work ethic. If all the rest of us worked as hard as they do this country would be booming.
What we need to do is stop blaming defenseless foreigners and look in the mirror. Those people are just like you and me, the bad guys are their leaders.
Sometimes I get depressed at all the bigotry. It just seems it never stops.
One of the things that often makes these issues more charged and ugly then they need be, is the melding of economic situations with the races/cultures of the participants. If economic discussions weren't so often shot through with subtle (and not so subtle ) references to ethnicity perhaps a little more clarity would be available. I'm guessing this thread will get tossed OT soon; glad to help. :)
Thanks Jack I was trying to make sure for him the brand was not going away, it probably will happen later but he is safe now for the time being I hope good luck
ZubZub, were you headed south on I-95 last week near the GA, FL line?
I was not trying to flame in my post, I was giving reason that at least I and I feel others feel about jobs going to Mexico and China.
Sure it is out wonderful upper management that is doing it...with the excuse that it is for the shareholders.
I happen to feel this is wrong.
One of the worst is the automakers wanting federal money...and they have plants in other countries which cost american jobs. (Of course the flip side is that they pay those american workers way more that is logical. And I have no problem paying folks for good work...however sometimes it gets ridiculous!)
As to the NC furniture...our company used to transport over 300 loads of furniture to FL EVERY week. It is half of that now. The other half, China and Mexico.
Respectfully
Jack
Luvrbus, I have a couple of friends in the bus 'bidness', I'll call them tomorrow and see if your suspicions are correct. You may be on to something there.

Hi Sean,
On the question of whether this thread is off topic, I would say that it is more on topic ... In NO way would I suggest that the thread be moved to the off topic area.
Perhaps I should have edited that part out of my second-to-last post, as well. I hereby retract the comment about moving the thread to OT. The OP, and the couple of comments immediately following it, looked like a political rant to me more than a bus conversion question. Since the intent behind that question has since been clarified, I'm fine with it. (Perhaps, now, we can all stick to answering it.) Perhaps also, shame on me for even asking for an explanation in the first place.
I have many more things I could say in response to some of the other comments in this thread, which I do believe to be quite off topic. But, since I don't think such discussion is appropriate in this section of the board, I will keep them to myself.
I, and I am sure many others, come here to receive and to share information about bus conversions. There are plenty of other places on the Internet where I could go if I wanted to discuss politics, NAFTA, race and ethnicity in the US, or myriad other topics. To the extent that off-topic material creeps into the threads, we dilute the value of the real information within them -- it takes more time and effort for the reader to follow the material to get to the information they need.
I acknowledge that it is difficult to know where the dividing line lies at any given moment -- we live in a highly interconnected world.
And, BTW, I certainly believe that all of us here on this board constitute a "community' (even if how close-knit is sometimes debatable), and that announcements and discussion regarding the health and well-being of our community members is, indeed, "on topic." FWIW.

Come on Gus nobody is claiming Chinese or Mexican people to be inferior we just want protectionism. In fact I have always stated the Chinese to be great manufactures and the Mexicans are the nicest people you'd ever want to meet. But what has that got to do with my childrens future trying to find a job in the rust belt? It has nothing to do with prejudice just economics. Sorry to get off topic but I wanted to respond to Gus. FWIW
This IS completely off-topic, for which I apologise in advance. Also, I am not trying to pick a fight with Airbag or anyone else, but just wanted to comment on his 'we just want protectionism' quote; protectionism is probably the number one reason for the dire state that the American automotive industry (and a lot of other manufacturing) is in. There are other reasons, such as very low fuel taxes, the natural (and understandable) 'buy American' instinct of the consumer, and the excessive ability of the 'big-three' to lobby against legislation to improve vehicle safety, emissions, fuel efficiency etc. But protectionism is the big one.
Historically the domestic American market was sufficiently large that American manufacturers didn't really need to export their products to other countries, and successive Governments put high trade barriers up against imports as well; the net result was that American vehicles (as an example) did not have to compete with those from foreign manufacturers and so fell behind in comparison. 'Competition Improves the Breed' and all that.
So, while protectionism works in the short term to keep plants open, over the medium and long term it does precisely the opposite. If you want to keep your job, by all means shout 'protect'. If you want your children to have jobs, shout 'compete'.
Jeremy
(Incidentally, I have a degree in economics, and I also own a Cadillac. I mention this as I took the opportunity last week to have a good look at a new Escalade I saw parked in a car park. I was genuinely shocked at how appalling the build quality of the body was - the panel fit and alignment was all over the place).
Rather than moving or cutting up this entire thread, I just started a new one over in the Off-Topic. Feel free to jump in !! I know we have hit some nerves and would like to see it blossom. Bring it on!!!! :)

I wish it was me. No I'm stuck behind a desk in Montreal. The good news is it's going up to -6C tomorrow!
Hey,we're back to wearing Hawaiian shirts and Bermuda shorts LOL this week ,60F degrees today 8)
It's funny how we make comments on the quality of assembling American products in Mexico. At Freightliner, we have two very up to date modern assembly plants in Mexico-one for our medium duty trucks and the other for heavy duty. The advantage there is cheaper labor-and most importantly labor that shows up everyday to keep production up. Also, the Mexicans working are trying much harder to get the trucks out, hence most of the trucks from Mexico are of higher quality assembly then here in the states. In South Carolina, the attendence to the assembly line can be 15-25% absent (as mentioned, not a problem in Mexico). Until our workforce again gets its' act together, and comes to work in a consistant rate, and has the pride to assemble in a quality manner, we in the USA will continue to ship our work out of the country-really ashame when you think about it. Good Luck, TomC
A friend very heavy in the conversion industry (Executive type) was very surprised when I read Clifford's post about the truck dealership selling the Volvo 9700's.
His understanding was that they would be sold through the Prevost dealers as the Prevost website said.
He will snoop arond a little.
The saga continues.
