Title: Finally diesel cheaper than regular unleaded!!!!!
Post by: grantgoold on February 20, 2009, 07:43:43 AM
This a.m. I paid $1.99 per gallon for diesel. Same station, regular unleaded was going for 2.19.  It is about time out here in Calitaxfornia that things got back to quasi normal.

How about where you folks are ??? ???

Interesting. It must be a state taxation difference.  I popped over to a couple of websites where they post the fuel prices at truck stop locations around the country. I'd estimate that in most states diesel is running about 20-25 cents/gal higher than regular unleaded.  California and some places in Oregon were the only U.S. stations where diesel was lower.

Doug, I didn't look up where Medford is, but Pilot, Flying J, and T/A  are showing Oregon stations selling diesel at $1.99/gal.

At the other end of the spectrum we have the wonderful taxation states of NY and Mass where diesel is running about 60 cents/gal higher than regular unleaded.

Just so no one is mislead -- the surcharge in Arizona also applies to RVs if they are over 26,000 lbs or have more than two axles.  Truck dispensers are set to automatically collect the extra 8 cents, car dispensers are set to collect the lesser amount.  RV islands at places like Flying-J are also set to collect the lesser amount, but, technically, you still owe it if your vehicle has three or more axles or weighs more than 13 tons.  There are stickers on the dispensers that point this out, along with the criminal penalties.  That said, I see three-axle RVs fueling at car and RV dispensers all the time, and I suspect few, if any, drivers go in to have the amount corrected.

On the flip side, if your vehicle qualifies for the discount, and you fuel at a surcharged dispenser such as at a truck island, you can go in to the fuel desk and have them correct the amount downward.

Oregon and Indiana, BTW, discount fuel for vehicles with PUC or ICC numbers, which you must provide at time of payment.  This is because they collect the fuel tax from commercial vehicles through IFTA rather than at the dispensers.  It has nothing at all to do with RVs -- it's strictly PUC vs. non-PUC vehicles, and it has to do with how the tax is collected.

Because of the way these stations report their "posted" fuel prices to various agencies, all the truck stop web sites such as Flying-J, Loves, etc. will show amounts for Oregon and Indiana that will need to be adjusted for non-commercial vehicles, and for Arizona that will need to be adjusted for two-axle vehicles less than 26,000 lbs.  There are fine-print footnotes on the pricing pages explaining this.

FWIW.

It isn't showing up at the pumps (yet) but I am involved with several properties that sell fuel and I can tell you that we are currently purchasing diesel for about 25 cents less than gasoline. Our fuel comes through a pipeline coming up and over the sierra mountains so I would imagine it's the same in California. Last week we had days where diesel cost fell substantially (6 cents and 8 cents a day) but gasoline either stayed the same or went up a penny. I am told its because of gasoline inventories have shrank causing the increase, but that doesn't explain the diesel decreases.

I plan to take a nice drive in the bus this weekend and burn up some of that $3.00 fuel I purchased last fall and replace it with some of the fresh $2.19 stuff we are selling at the pump now. I am sure that once I fill up we will most likely lower the price to below $2.00 within the week (it seems to usually work that way).

I'm back in Ireland working, and I'll never complain about the cost of diesel in the States ever! At least until it is higher than Europe! It's about three times higher, no wonder they drive fuel efficient diesels over here.

When I get back home I'm gonna fill up the bus and go for a drive and be thankful I can do that!

Yeah, we not only live on the left coast and pay higher prices for practically everything but i live in Jackson county which has the highest prices in Oregon.  I would assume the $1.99 price is up north because Costco gas is now even over $2.00/gallon.

Did I mention I was tired of Oregon?

Not sure which Paul you are asking the question, seems there's more than one now! ;D

In Northern Ireland it's about .94 + - (pound) per litre.

That's about $5.49 per gallon, that is if my conversion is correct with today's market!

It was much higher last December, when the dollar was up. It is 1.44 per pound now.

I was surprised with this thread, as in NJ we are at lowest $2.12 - $2.10 /gal of Diesel, Reg unleaded is about $1.70.
That diesel was at an independant truck stop near Camden ( only Second this year in homicides ).

Pardon me if I digress for a moment on a topic somewhat related to this thread.

Here in the Mid-Atlantic states and in New England it is pretty common to heat homes with a "heating oil" furnace. Home heating oil is essentially diesel fuel without the highway taxes. The delivery services give you several payment options. You can pay-as-you-go, but you are at the mercy of fluctuating prices which typically tend to rise in the winter. Or you can opt for the delivery service's annual pre-pay plan that locks in a rate by purchasing the what you intend to use up front (summer).

Some years we pre-pay, some years we do not.   Last June, with fuel prices skyrocketing, our delivery service sent us notification that this year's lock-in price would be $4.34/gal.   Yikes.  But at the way prices had been climbing it looked like it could hit $5.   Another nasty Gulf hurricane and we could see $6.  The pre-pay option was the oild delivery service's version of the Eastwood question: "So, do you feel lucky?"

Well, we opted not to pre-pay (Whew!).  Yesterday we had a tank of oil delivered.  The price.....drumroll....  $1.74 / gal.   Let's just say there are lot's of folks with a major case of the pissed-offers cause they bought at $4.34.  And that is not just my delivery service's figure.  Another local company set their summer pre-pay at $4.36.

Seems like folks have to be experts in oil futures to survive these times.

EdNJ,

I have seen previous posts of less expensive fuel in central Jersey, but with my 140 mile daily commute with one of two diesel vehicles I still can not do better than the $ 2.10. Next bus fill up / exercise run may require me to stop up....

Thanks and enjoy the day.

WEC4104, I could use some of your assistance in planning my 401K with your notibable, recent, expertice in oil futures.... LOL.

Here in the DC Greater Metropolitan Area ( we are 30 miles south of DC on I-95 ) gas is going for 1.99 a gallon and diesel is 2.69.

Just 30 miles south of us diesel is 1.99 a gallon.  Oil is holding under 40 dollars a barrel but fuel prices are going up.   Bunch of fargin bastages.

I rarely jump on the oil companies because I understand the difference between profit and profit margin.  But this time, I truly believe we are being hosed because they can.

Stepping off of my soapbox now.....

In Quebec, Canada, today, the diesel is 0.91$/ a liter. I paid 0.99$/ a liter last week. It's a deal...Last summer, I paid 1.59$/ a liter...

Why diesel goes up and down continually day after day?

Diesel dropped 23 cents per gallon sometime in the past few days.  That is the biggest drop since at November or December.  The price is $2.06.  Diesel prices around my neighborhood are now pretty much in line with the rest of the Minneapolis area.  Gasoline was $1.85.

I don't find diesel prices to change that much especially compared to gasoline.  The price had been $2.29 for at least two weeks.  I do remember I think in 2004 that diesel prices were $1.54 a gallon at one station for three months straight.
