Post by: DD/102 on February 18, 2009, 07:35:32 PM
I picked up a 3406b to possibly use in my conversion, but it needs a injection pump, or at least a pump cam for mine. pump casting#7e5888 pump group #7c6650 (18 degree cam)  Eng ser# is 5kj01622, engine was at the very end of the b's anybody have a suggestion where or who might have a cam or pump within reason.                                Thanks ,  Darrell

Sorry I have always gotten my parts from the Cat dealer. (3306)

Don't know what level you are at wrenching but you will need to use a timing wheel
and set the rack after pulling the pump apart.

Good luck and let us know if you find a good place to get parts :)

You are in luck big time.  I won't guarantee they have one, but if they don't it will be found and very reasonable.  http://www.raysusedequip.com/ Ask for Robin.  He will hook you up with the part or the right people.

Those injection pumps on the 3406B and mechanical C are incredibly long lived injection pumps.  I have almost 1.2 million miles on my engine and except for resealing the pump against leaks, have not done anything to it. They are so reliable, that Cat typically doesn't even carry them.  They can rebuild it for you, but are probably talking in the $2-3,000 range.  Look for one at a junk yard-since they are so long lived, most will be in good working order.  As a matter of fact, yours is the first I've heard of with a real problem.  Good Luck, TomC

Thanks guys I appreciate your help, Ojt, I'm working with Ernie on this now, apparently this pump and cam are kind of an oddball setup and there weren't too many produced. At least I'm headed in the right direction now.                               Thanks again, Darrell
