Title: satelite dish
Post by: ruthi on January 26, 2009, 07:50:16 AM
Has anyone used the low profile satelite dish? It is 4 inches tall. We would like to use it to save on overall height. I have heard that because these are flat on top, you could have an issue with puddling on top when you are parked and it rains. Just wanted other opinions, and experience with it. We have the regular size one now on our old bus, but doing a new one, and want to keep clearance as low as possible. Other than using that one, I dont know of any other options. Thanks for the help.

Maybe we can get Nick to chime in since he knows a bit about this subject. :)

We were parked next to an rv that had one.  It isn't just rain,  it's the morning dew too, and snow.  They tried everything to make the dew run to no avail.  They were planning on replacing it with a replacement they had on order.  They full time and didn't have the problem with the taller dish.  I have also heard that reception is real iffy way up north since the dish size is so much smaller.

There's no substitute for size; bigger really is better, no matter what your girlfriend may tell you.  Most particularly in fringe areas a bigger dish will give reception when you wouldn't otherwise have it - think rain, overcast or just generally outside the footprint.

There are lower profile domes now that split the difference. I think trac vision hs one about 9-11 inches tall that gets you close to a duo therm penguin.

Fred Flintstone here with his crank up aerial antenna will have to bite the bullet and spend some coin to get one of these modern systems that will probably be worth more than my bus. Darn FCC and their make us pay digital TV. Which one?

Are you talking sat. antenna or "off air" antenna for local stations?  We have both in crank-up version. Wingard "Batwing" for off air and Wingard crank up Sat dish.  Both antennas will work with the new digital signals. Only thing that has to be changed is an old style analog (CRT) TV. Either a converter box or replace with a digital TV.  We replaced both the old CRT TVs in our bus wth LCD digital flat screen TVs. Reception is as good on the new TVs, including local channels off the "Batwing".  Jack

I have the SV360  TracStar's in motion dome. Works great even in light rain. Even have reception in the northern areas.
