Every six months the light comes on to change the filter. Just the wife and I at home, this seams a little excessive. Dose the filter really clog/go bad or is it on a timer to tell you to change it. The filter whirlpool #4396841 sells for $39.99
Can anyone helpwith this or know of a place to buy it at a better price.

I have the refrig's with the built in filters in the house and my bus. I don't have a light that tells me when to replace the filters
but, I change them once a year. I have city water and that might be more filtered then a well. [I drink alot of water too..]
Depending on the quality of your water, you may have shorter intervals then me. One way to judge when is pay attention
to the volume of water that is dispenced. If it seems to be slowing down, then it's time.. ;)

I put a filter in the refrigerators supply line after the bus water filter in the service bay. This filter is comparable to the factory but costs considerably less. It's also much easier to change in the bay than laying on the floor.
You must have a computer because you post questions. Google items and you would be amazed at what you can find. Whirlpool water filters brought up many hits. Try www.abt.com $32 each 4396841 with free shipping in continental USA. This is the cheapest I could find. I would not change it every 6 months unless you see reduced flow or a bad taste. The light is basically just a reminder. .
I think they are typically based on volume of water through them, but they could be a simple timer. We have a Kenmore with the same. It has a display that shows percentage left. When it hits 0, I reset it and use the same filter for two or three iterations. Usually change it every two years or so.
It's a gimmick to sell you those high priced filters. Next time I need to buy a fridge I'll look for one without the filter setup.
