Title: Installing Motion windows in GMC
Post by: johns4104 on January 05, 2009, 06:07:50 PM
Does the window rubber need sealant and is the installation tool the same as the windshield tool. Where can I get this tool.
These are the "D" windows.
Also where do you put the seam in the rubber (bottom)?

On the 4104/4106 and maybe others have you used the aluminum angle that comes with the window to help fill the leading edge of the driver and pass. window?
I was thinking of maybe using some round or square tubing and have the window hold it in, rather than riveting the angles to my bus.

Thanks,
John

John, the door and drivers window uses the angles on the INSIDE of the window opening to hold in the window, you will find after installing the rubber, the window will be a very tight fit. You should have four angles, each length will equal the lenght of one inside frame, front, rear, left, right. The screws provided will go thru the pre punced holes in each angle piece and tap into the window frame extrusion, inside to outside. After you get it installed you make the decision to use sealant or not, I chose not to and have had no leakages.  The "D" windows use a "lock and key method and requires the use of the special tool to insert the "key strip", make sure you do not stretch the key strip or it will shrink later, when cutting the key do so on the long side and force it into the slot to make a watertite seal at the bottom.>>>Dan

John, after reading your post again, I will add some more. The "angle" as you call it is not an angle, its a Z extrusion, when installed the inside of the window frame will be about 1/4 inch inboard of the extrusion edge all the way around the frame, there will be no hole or gap to fill. You will need at least one helper, a rubber mallet, some pry tools, and some discussions with God.. for some reason my door was way more difficult than the drivers. Luck>>>Dan

Dan,
I am familiar with the "Z" channel that goes inside.
Motion included a drawing and also included a aluminum angle that they show as filler for the leading edge of the vertical on the out side.
The  angle gets riveted to the "A" piller and the bend goes in toward the bus.
I would like to install without it if it would seal and look ok.
The instructions calls for sealant on the flange surface that the "Z" channel clamps on (only on the outside)

It is kind of like the window should have been longer but instead they provide a filler angle?
I don't know how old these are, they are brand new in the box but they came with my parts bus.

Thanks,
John

John, Ive never seen that system, it may have been an early attempt. The problem all along (in my opinion) has been trying to install a flat window frame into a rounded door frame, it works, but not as well as it could.>>>Dan

Thanks Dan,
I had motion windows in my bus when I bought it and removed them to paint etc. (they were not installed with the alum. angle.)
I think I will compare the length to the new ones. Of course I don't know which ones are newer.
