What material is being used for lineing generator compartments? I used a sound down type product, that is no longer available. Sounddown is now $255 for a 4 1/2 foot by 6 foot sheet. There must be a more economial alternitve.

Hi Jim
I am currently working on this project for my conversion. I have looked at Sounddowns' website, which is impressive, but their prices are out of this world.
There are two companies I am considering for the enclosure. One, Serious Materials in CA, www.quietsolution.com and the other www.Nucleid.com in NJ. Serious Material has plywood that is mass loaded with vinyl for soundproofing but cuts just like regular plywood. Nucleid has plywood that has a layer of lead built into it and again cuts just like regular plywood. Serious Material also has a paint that you can put 3, 1mm thick coats on the inside of the plywood to cut the sound more. Finally, a company, www.soundproofingamerica.com, has 2 pound mass loaded vinyl that can be glued directly to the inside painted side of the plywood for even more reduction.
I am planning a layer of plywood, 1 inch open airspace, layer of plywood, then paint then mass loaded vinyl from outside to inside. If this works like I think, I should have a generator that operates in the 15-20db range.
Check these sights out and let me know what you think as I haven't spent any money yet and it would be good to get an extra set of eyes looking at things.

Hey Rob. At the very least i would fill the 1 inch of airspace with fiberglass insulation. When i built my house, i used the fiberglass in all the interior bedrooms walls. It was 1 1/2" thick and was labeled "sound deadening insulation." Perhap someone else will come up with better ideas, but anything will be better than leaving an air space in there.
There was recently a thread on this board that covered this subject from A to Z and back again. Do yourself a favor and search for the subject or even get a list of my feedbacks cause I wrote a bunch.
This is in your favor, now.

Ductboard!
I cannot open the Nucleid site. The MLV does not appear to have a heat rateing so I would not use it inside the gen compartment. I do not see any reason it could not be used outside. A double layer of plywood with the MLV in between would dampen a lot of sound.
I was interested in prices and where you are buying material. I bought mine from an outfit in Oldsmar Fl which seems to have disapeared.
John, when you refer to a previous thread please post a link, I cannot find my own past posts on a search of this site!!
Jim
JJ,
I hear you on that. There seems to be two separat search engines on this board. If I do a search based on a post I get one list. If I go to members and do a list on myself there I get a second version. I I just type in my name and do a search I get still a third variation. None are complete in themselves as I recall. It isn't you Amigo....its the machine. (programmer)
I did ask the moderators about this many moons ago....No joy in the Cockpit!

The Wiki will be a wonderful feature when they get it going!!
JJ,
Actually I am pretty dense on the wondrous features ala computer. I don't know how to "add" stuff.
I went and found my thread and can copy it in here. Problem was my comments, and many others, were added into a thread titled LEAD SHEATING. Hard to find that if you hadn't been there and the title jumped at you. Anyway....
