Title: My 4106 has Kienzle Apparate mech. Tachograph!
Post by: OneLapper on December 28, 2008, 07:36:31 PM
It mechanical for certain.  It also has a windup clock and what looks like a time card system that tracked top speed!  Anyone else have this setup?  This one is non functional, the drive cable is broken and the plastic gears to the odometer is cracked.  Any one know where there may be a parts speedo?

Thanks,

Mark

Mark -

Oh. . . You've got a Tattle-Tale on the dashboard!!

Owners had them installed to monitor their drivers for performance - there was a disc inserted inside, the clock was wound up, and it kept track of what happened, speed-wise, over a 24-hr period.

Naturally, most driver's hated them. . .

These were NOT stock - they were an option.  The stock speedometer has the GMC logo in the center.  Some were cable-driven, and some were electrically-driven, depending on what was ordered.

Can you take a photo and share it?  Might help.

FWIW & HTH. . .

Evidently it's a Tachograph!  And I found a website that may sell repair parts for it!  I'll post some pictures tomorrow if all goes well.

It's going to need some work.  The drive cable is broken at the tranny end, but it's the inside drive and not the outside part that threads onto the tranny drive.

The clock works for about 10 minutes then needs a budge.

The clock won't adjust to the correct time, feels like a stripped gear.

The odometer counter shaft (plastic gear and shaft assembly) is broken.

They are a legal requirement in Europe, and measure the driver's hours behind the wheel as well as speed. Although my bus no longer needs one when used as a motorhome it obviously still has one fitted, and the operator I bought it from suggested I keep it for possible use as evidence in case I ever get stopped for speeding.

Jermey, what brand is yours?  Most of the sites I've found for the Kienzles are in Europe.

Thanks,

I've no idea, but I can look to see if it has any identifying marks when I am back home in a few days.
