Title: Dash Gages
Post by: Ericbsc on December 18, 2008, 02:49:04 PM
I am installing a new dash . I noticed that there are two water temp sensors on my 8-71, left and right bank. Do you need both? I have only one water temp gage in the set I bought and they do not make that style at vdo anymore. Go with one?

I think the 2 "sensors" you are referring to on the thermostat housings are the "hot engne" alarmstats.
These are switches to set off the hot engine alarm (and possibly an automatic engine shutdown).  These are not senders for gauges.  On MCIs and probably other makes using 8V71s, each thermostat housing has an alarmstat and one has a gauge sender while the other has a capillary tube for a mechanical gauge that is installed in the engine compartment.
That said, we installed 2 water temperature gauges on our MC-8 8V71. We had to add the senders that came with the gauges, installing one in each thermostat housing using different holes than the Alarmstats.  Jack

Dash gauges that I would suggest-and what I have in my big rig.  Speedo with odometer and trip odometer; Tachometer with hour meter; fuel gauge; fuel filter restriction gauge; water temp (right and left if a V block); oil pressure; engine oil temperature; pyrometer if turbocharged (right and left if a V block); transmission temp; rear axle temp.  Just a thought.  Good Luck, TomC

Eric, Even though this does not answer your question, I wanted to put this out there for you...or anyone lese who has VDO guages.

There is a place that I used and tons of other Porsche owners use to fix, refurbish, and customize their VDo guages. The name of the company is North Hollywood Speedometer website is here.. http://www.nhspeedometer.com/

They can do custom silkscreen colors, new glass, bezels, and fix old, worn out guages. Just thought I would throw that out there for you or anyone else who has some VDo stuff...

Eric,
In addition to Tom's complete list you might allocate space for genset guages water temp, oil press. volt meter, and hour meter. I run the genset for OTR roof air's and like to monitor while driving.
If you search Jack Conrad guages you will find additional ideas, ie air press, brake application press etc.

Best of luck in your endeavors,

Gary

I probably need help identifying what goes where. Looking from the back of an 05 eagle 8-71. On the left and right top are sensors going into the water manifold. I haven't put an ohm meter on them but assumed they were temp senders since they have only one post. On the lower left looks like another. The oil sender, and low oil shutdown are remote mounted to the left of this one. I can't find a layout of all this in the manual so I need some of you guys with that real world school of hard knocks to help me avoid a costly mistake!!. I have the oil pressure gage hooked up. It works fine. After looking at the rats nest of wiring up front and in back, I made the executive decision to rewire all of it. I have everything in working order with new panels down to the water temp, and low oil/high temp shutdown. The shut downs I am going to wire into the skinner to kill power. I have a link to thea picture. http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/photo/2842323820053449967oTwmoP

I am quite certain that the 05 eagle was equipped with two temperature gauges.
