AND IT WAS STILL RUNNING????  Get the name of that Mfr.  I have only heard stories of Land Cruisers getting their owners home in that kind of shape.

Is that the spiders in the bottom of the case?

Amazed, as always

John

To bad you can't switch to a good old Meritor (old Rockwell) 23,000lb axle.  They'll take just about all you dish it.  Good Luck, TomC

That may be Tom but the worst case of lunched diff I ever saw was a 23,000# Rockwell out of a high floatation truck where the driver had a full load (8 tons) on the box and hooked up to another truck to pull it out but pulled in reverse.  Those high float trucks had a 2.5:1 deep reduction behind of an Allison so there was no end of torque and you never saw such a collection of shattered pins and gear teeth as fell out of that diff when we got it back in the shop.

Everything has their limits.  The 23,000lb has a huge 18" ring gear that under normal operating, like our buses, will last and last-as long as you take care of the lube oil and change it at suggested intervals.  Good Luck, TomC

Doesn't matter how big the gears are when a bearing comes apart.

How does the pinion look? That ring gear could be used; clean up the rough edges and set it up tight.

Usually, if you STOP using it as soon as you hear the warning noise, it is cheaper to repair. I know sometimes it's hard, but it ain't likely to heal itself by putting more miles on it.  :o

Wife came in one Thursday evening & said "you need to look at the brakes on my car, they are making an unusual sound". I looked & the pad had come off the backing plate & it was steel on steel with the rotor chewed up badly. I asked when the noise started & the reply was "last week sometime". So, new rotors & calipers were required instead of just pads . . .  :'(

Anyways, you're on the road again & making it pay for it's keep.
Life is good again.
