Post by: platinum mci on December 05, 2008, 02:58:34 PM
Why on some 92series detroits the enginge is painted red and others are green and silver.  I thought they sould all be silver if there the 92series?

Our MC-8 had a red 8V71 in it when we purchased it.  I was told by someone (don't remember who) that Greyhound painted their engines red when they rebuilt them.  I cannot confirm this.  Jack

If it's Red it's most likely a Greyhound rebuild.
When Greyhound was rebuilding it's engines for their fleet they painted them red.
At one time Greyhound had advertisement in bus magazines that they (Greyhound) rebuilt their engines and showed a photo of a Detroit in Greyhound Red paint.

Anybody with a spray can of paint can change the colour of the engine.

Don't put any thought into the meaning of the paint colour.

I know a place that goobered up the engine compartment with silver paint, pretending to be silver engines.

An 8V71 sure looks funny in Detroit Silver....

happy coaching!

buswarrior......I'm not sosss sures about that.  Seems to me logic would demand that ALL 2-stroke Detroit Diesels SHOULD be painted BLACK 'cause it would save time in the end!  He he he.  Just Kidding!!!  HB of CJ :) :) :)

I have a 8v-71 that came out of a fire truck that was repowered  with a 740 allison by a apparatus builder, it was painted red and was a factory remaned  engine ,  i got the paper work  with it . My son works for a detroit shop , they say all of the factory rebuilds are painted red.

I have never saw a factory Reliabilt engine painted any color but green for the 71 series and silver for the 92 series, but was told by a large Detroit Dealer when the customer wanted a out of frame rebuild on his engine they were painted different colors to distinguish those from a factory rebuild.NJT painted theirs different colors for the month and year they were rebuilt.

good luck

I don't know if they continued the practice but Seattle transit used different color each year on in house rebuilds.
