If Dr. Doolitle was gonna do a bus conversion, I guess he'd use one of these.
Had to ride one at the Washinton-Dulles airport.
Thought it was interesting.

We rode those a few months ago when we flew into Dulles as well. Pretty cool the way they elevate up to the terminal level. Would be great at a NASCAR race!

I ride them quite a bit, as I'm in and out of Dulles periodically. They run both single-enders, and the double-enders. They lumber along, probably 20 MPH max. With such a high center of gravity, I wouldn't want to take a turn any faster.
The airport is building an underground train connecting the gate piers with the main terminal (very much like Atlanta/Hartsfield). I suspect that will make many of them surplus, probably the double-enders. Unfortunately, they're about 16 feet wide (my estimate), and way beyond 13'6" tall - even when lowered - with the jackscrew posts on top, so they wouldn't be street legal in any regard. From the sound of the diesels, probably just as well, because we'd probably be talking about gallons per mile, rather than miles per gallon.

Back in the early 60's, I was just a kid and living in Northern Virginia. Our family took a few Sunday drives out to see a new airport that was being built named Dulles. When the airport first opened they had an open house and we got to see the bus-like shuttles that transported passengers out to the planes. It was so unique at the time, it was like some science fiction movie. In '64 I had my first jet flight (a TWA 707) and we rode one of those people movers out to the plane. Maybe that's where first developed the bus nut thing ::)
