Title: Looking for a ZF rear end for my Setra!
Post by: Busted Knuckle on November 07, 2008, 05:06:58 AM
Hey ya'll I'm looking for a rear end for my '95 Setra S217.

I would like to find a used or rebuilt unit.

Or a new one from anyone but Setra!

Setra is real proud of theirs and I really don't want to pay an outrageous price for one. So if any of ya know where I might find one ANYWHERE please let me know!

I kinda need it ASAP as the one we have is going out and extremely noisy. The tour group we have right now complained about the noise yesterday and Dad & I went for a ride while Robert drove and it is terrible!

Robert is going to have it filled with lube this AM and limp it home, but it gonna be out of service until I replace it.
And this is a busy time for us, so I need to get it going ASAP. Which means if I have too I'll pay Setra's hostile demand.

On the good side of this I heard we may need to keep the S417 loaner longer!  YEA! ;D  BK  ;D

I have a spare rear end out of a 1998 MCI EL3. I am fairly sure that it is a ZF. It is complete but would take the  gear out if yiou need it and it will work for you. Let me know.

BK,

You might try Easter bus sales, or Lewis bus sales. (This is not an endorsement of them to buy a coach from.) I do know that they sometimes part buses out. Easters had a lot of Setras on the lot, last time we saw. Just an idea. If you call Lewis bus sales, ask for Talmadge (I think that is the spelling). If you call Easters, talk to Bobby Easter (Easters has a truckload of buses). They know what they have, and might have a rear end for you. They also have the guys to take it out. Just be careful that you know that which rear end you need. They have been known in the past to, well, shall we say, I guess, giving them the benefit of the doubt, might occasionally get some of their facts mixed up. So they might be able to help, and they are nice guys.

HTH

God bless,

John

I have read reports here that Easter's does not like to pull and sell parts.  They do have 100s and 100s of old buses in the rear part of the lot that will probably never sell.

I've never personally tried to buy a part from Easter's though I did buy my bus there.  I am only repeating what others have said about trying to buy parts pulls from Easter's.

Do people really want the old buses in hiis back lot?  I wandered around the back lot when buying my bus and a lot of the old MCIs had the doors open and vines and other plants growing inside the bus.  A number of the buses had various parts cannibalized to get other buses running.  They took an A/C clutch off an old bus to get the A/C on a sold bus running while I was there.

There is no reason not to call Easter's to ask about parts.  I wouldn't pass up anyone who might have the right part at the right price.

Seriously my friend, try these folks : http://fleetpride.com/fp_p/branch.html
We bought DU assy's from them, no problems, fair price.
Best of luck BK.

Thank you everybody! I knew I could count on ya'll for some good sources. I only have a minute right now, but as soon as I get  chance to later today or tomorrow I'll jot this info down so I can make calls on Monday!

Unless there is something or way I don't know of Easter's does not sell parts, or at least that is what they always tell me! But it doesn't hurt to try.

Thanks again, I'll be back! ;D  BK  ;D
